Empower and excel with Elemental

Our alternative provision programmes are a chance to engage young people through a bespoke combination of watersports and personal development.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can participate?

We welcome cohorts of eight students per course who will be interviewed by a member of the Elemental team and a member of school staff to assess suitability.

Where do sessions take place?

Selected students will be offered sessions at Swanpool Beach in Falmouth and/or Elemental Surf Lodge in Newquay. Each centre offers a slightly different programme, and we can draw up a varied schedule that includes time in each location.

What activities are involved?

Sessions are divided between watersports and learning additional skills such as first aid and surf lifesaving, working towards certification from the relevant National Governing Body if appropriate. Every session can be adjusted to the needs of your young people.

There will also be group conference time dedicated to personal development. Students will engage in guided discussions on topics such as self-respect, community behaviour and future goals. This will be hosted by a senior member of staff who will have been on the water with the group to build trust and respect.

Group conference time is designed to focus on one specific question per session, to be agreed in advance with the school. Possible topics include:

How are you feeling today?
How do we increase respect for ourselves and others?
How am I viewed by others, and why?
How do we represent ourselves in the community?
What are our views on bullying?
Where would I like to be in the future, and how am I going to get there?

Students will also complete a Wheel of Life assessment at three points during the course to allow them to reflect on their individual progress and to allow us to measure the impact of the intervention. Data also provides a useful metric for county, Ofsted and future funding possibilities.

Is lunch and tea provided?

Yes. Cold catering is available at Swanpool, while hot catering is available in Newquay. In both cases we include discussions around healthy eating.

What is your behaviour policy?

Our focus is on good behaviour, and it will be made clear to all students that school rules still apply with the same sanctions. To underline this, we would request that a member of teaching staff stays with the cohort for the first session.
